Frequently asked questions

What is the solidarity economy? “Today, perhaps as never before, more people are becoming aware that capitalism has turned our lives and our planet into a commodity. A system that is environmentally unsustainable and socially unjust, and that it is not able to guarantee the happiness and dignified life conditions of all persons in any place on the planet.” - Carlos Askunze, REAS (Source: RIPESS.org)

We aren’t meant to live in a world where most of the wealth is in the hands of less than 1% of the population; where the well-being of people and the planet are secondary to the profits of corporations.

The solidarity economy is a global movement to build a just and sustainable economy where we prioritize living in harmony with people and the planet over endless profit and growth. Where we govern through real democracy, cooperative and public ownership, and a culture of solidarity and respect for the earth.

What is the #ShareMyCheck campaign? People who are able to survive right now on their salaries or on accumulated savings and other assets do not need a stimulus. For those of us who are lucky enough to be financially stable, we can take our first step toward an equitable redistribution of our own wealth and assets to ensure that we all have enough to make it through this collective crisis.

Our campaign is in coordination with efforts led by Resource Generation, a national nonprofit that organizes young people with wealth and class privilege. We thank Resource Generation for their leadership in this campaign! In an effort to highlight the collective impact of the #ShareMyCheck campaign, your pledge amount will be communicated to Resource Generation so your donation can be counted towards the campaign total. Follow along with the campaign here.

What kind of grants will #ShareMyCheck donations fund? While NEC's Movement Support Fund is usually focused on resourcing long-term solutions, the current moment is asking us to meet people's immediate needs. We don't think these are mutually exclusive. For this reason, NEC is committed to making general operating rapid relief grants available through our existing Movement Support Fund. And we are committed to moving more money this year than in any other year of the fund.

What is the history of the Movement Support Fund? The New Economy Coalition’s Movement Support Program is one of the organization’s longest-running and established efforts. Since 2013, the program has provided resources and financial support for over 90 projects led by youth and frontline organizations doing transformative work to build more just, democratic, and sustainable economies. Learn more about our grantees.

Existing support for the Movement Support Fund is currently provided by the Cloud Mountain Foundation. We are seeking to increase the amount of funding we are able to provide by encouraging new donors to support solidarity economy grassroots organizers.

Who will receive funding? Rapid response grants from the Movement Support Fund are for NEC members and/or past grantees who have annual budgets under $100,000, and are either:
(1) Facing financial instability as a result of COVID-19, or
(2) Implementing community-led solutions to the economic and/or health impacts of COVID-19.

How can I apply for a grant? Eligible groups can apply starting May 1. We will accept applications on a rolling basis.

How and when will grant decisions be made? Funding decisions will be determined collectively by the Movement Support Team — a committee of past NEC grantees. The application will open on May 1, 2020 and the deadline to submit a proposal is May 15, 2020. Grantees should expect to hear back from us by June 1.

When will awarded groups receive grants? Grant decisions will be finalized by the end of May; grantees can expect checks to arrive in early June.

There’s no going back from this moment, but where we go from here is up to all of us.
